Theatre By The Sea's 2015 season opens strong with the musical revue Smokey Joe's Cafe. Shimmying its way onto the Matunuck stage, the musical was nominated for seven Tony awards, and won a Grammy in 1996 for Best Musical Show Album.
Comprised of 38 songs written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, this revue is packed with some of the most memorable classic songs, including "Hound Dog," "Yakity Yak," "Jailhouse Rock," and "Love Potion #9." Paired with fun and energetic choreography by show director Kevin P. Hill, this show has audiences singing and dancing in their seats.
Alana Cauthen makes an impressive Theatre By The Sea debut with "Fools Fall In Love (Reprise)" and "Saved," while Kendall Hope of Matunuck wows audiences with "Pearl's A Singer."
Dance captain Mary Claire King performs stunning dances during "Poison Ivy" and "Teach Me How To Shimmy," and sings a memorable number "Trouble" with Brittany Walters. Walters, a recent Boston Conservatory graduate, impresses audiences with her strong vocals and character-infused performances during "Don Juan" and "Some Cats Know."
"Poison Ivy" performed by Mary Claire King, Darrell T. Joe, Malcolm Armwood, Kevin Curtis, and Israel R. Hillery.
Darrell T. Joe's resonating bass added to all the company numbers, but his solos in "Little Egypt" and "You're The Boss" with Walters were engaging. Israel R. Hillery's "Poison Ivy" has audiences laughing along.
Audiences are sure to love Patrick Graver's humorous performance in "Teach Me To Shimmy," and Malcolm Armwood's show stealing performance during "There Goes My Baby".
Kevin Curtis is very animated and funny in "Searchin'," "D. W. Washburn," and "Treat Me Nice" with Cauthen. Like Walters, Curtis infuses his performances with character, making each song he performs impressive and memorable.
