What is it you see as you drive through Cromwell, searching for somewhere (anywhere!) to eat? What haunts your dreams as you sleep uneasy at the Cromwell Crowne Plaza Hotel?
Why yes, it is a giant floating clown head.
Wild Bill's novelty shop uses a carnival-like theme to draw people to it, complete with haunted house, old rides, a ticket booth, and monster murals. And a 5' clown head at the top of a two-story tower, which for some reason is illuminated at all hours of the night.
The shop itself is a combination of a consignment store & a Newbury Comics, selling VHS tapes, animal skulls, comic books, used toys, bobble heads, pins, clothes, and taxidermy animals. They even have this display:
That is in fact the terminator wearing a fancy hat, standing over a baby and an assortment of tortoise shells. And in the center is a metal bear sculpture, with an actual skull. And of course it is all for sale!
This shop also features an 18+ area, which I was personally not brave enough to venture into. But I'm sure it was filled with the same magic and carefully crafted displays as the rest of the store.
So believe me when I say that no trip to Cromwell is complete without a stop to Wild Bill's.
Oh, and save yourself some time: try dinner at Billy Tees Sports Bar -- it's one of the few places open for dinner in the area and the wings are pretty good.
