I first visited Bolton Landing for a conference in the fall of 2008, and fell in love almost immediately. The resort town was quiet and still; everybody had gone back to school or work, and the town was quite literally ours. A few years later, I decided to visit again in the fall, and have continued returning every fall since.
The small town is located on Lake George, a body of water which one imagines is teeming with pleasure crafts and swimmers in the summer, but in the fall is fairly abandoned. The Sagamore, a resort island on Lake George, has a boat that will bring you to fantastic views of the lake, the towns, and the fall foliage on the surrounding mountains.
Downtown has several shops and restaurants, of which my favorite is the Lakeside Lodge Grill. Delicious food at reasonable prices, the Lodge has great atmosphere and service. But for breakfast I prefer Audie and Ina's Country Diner, where you can get waffles of which I am a great fan. The best part, in my opinion, is that while you hear others complain about parking, service, and crowding in Bolton Landing, if you go in the fall the town is yours.
But the highlight of these trips is always seeing what events are happening . This year I happened to be there for Octoberfest, the Art Festival, and the Chili Cook off, where you could sample chilis from various restaurants and homemade.
Bolton Landing might be quiet in the fall, but it is never dull and is so much fun.
